Synthesis, characterization, and antiparasitic effects of zinc oxide nanoparticles-eugenol nanosuspension against Toxoplasma gondii infection

BackgroundIn this study, zinc oxide nanoparticles-coated with eugenol (ZnO@Eug) were synthesized and evaluated as a nanosuspension (NSus) formulation against Toxoplasma gondii in vitro vivo.MethodsAn anti-Toxoplasma activity assay for ZnO@Eug NSus was conducted vitro, ex vivo, vivo. FTIR spectroscopy confirmed the formation of by detecting several functional groups involved; EDX SEM demonstrated grain ZnO-NPs embedded Eug compositional purity.ResultsSurface charge (ZP) size distribution (DLS) determined to be −22.7 mV 109.6 nm, respectively. According release kinetics, approximately 60% released first 45 min. In cytotoxicity assay, ZnO-NPs, Eug, had IC50 values 71.85, 22.39, 2.02 mg/mL, The therapeutic efficacy T. 56.3%, which not significantly different from that spiramycin (58.9%) (Positive-control). tissue tachyzoites liver, spleen, peritoneum less than 50% treated spiramycin, compared control. ZnO@Eug-treated showed survival rate up 13 days.ConclusionsThe antiparasitic minimal toxic effects high efficiency increasing infected mice. nanoformulations incorporated could, future, considered treating toxoplasmosis humans animals if detailed study determine precise dose measure side effects.
